Hey i have satellite, and i got some pretty good results. i didn't really believe it but after i saw it, man it was awsome, i thought it was the cache, so i cleaned it out, and i still got the same test results, i even tried it on my friends computer, and got the same thing. this is a kool satellite.

::::::::::.. Download Stats ..::::::::::
Connection is:: 5452 Kbps about 5.2 Mbps (tested with 2992 KB)
Download Speed is:: 536 kB/s
Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/
Bottom Line:: 83 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 2.53 second(s)

The only thing that is slow is the up load, it says it uploads at 318 kB/s but, it think thats slow, Shouldm't it be the same as download speeds????

Does anyone have a faster download speed?????

That upload is actually extremely fast. You have one of the best connections out there, satellite or not. Satellite isn't good for gaming because of ping time issues. But, with speeds like that, it's good for everything else.

To answer your question, no. Upload speeds are almost always slower than download. As I said though, that's still very fast.

If you truly have satellite then those speeds are bogus, because satellite is incapable of those speeds, it was cached, and if you were to post those results here then you'll get responses that it is bogus.

Yes, I have a faster download but mine is Cable not Satelite. And no you shouldnt have your upload at the same speeds as your download. The only time you have the same download/upload is if you have SDSL, T1, and T3 connection.

I'm not saying you're lying. I'm just wondering how you know satellite just absolutely isn't capable of reaching those speeds? Just because you don't know about it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

luwigie had a DW 4000 and tested speed against a swedish server and he got crappy result in TCP but in UDP he had 10 Mbps downstream

that make me think its possible to go fast even tho its alot harder in TCP, cos you need to shake hands several times with server and client (sending acknowledge packets).

If you're talking about my post, I've used satellite since 1999 and all those years never seen above 2.2 Mbps down, upload speeds are the same or a little better then dialup, its much slower these days because of the overcrowding of satellites and transponders as they added another satellite to meet the needs, recently added Horizon 1, it is shared bandwidth, reason for the crappy FAP http://www.dslreports.com/faq/4496

His speeds aren't what you are seeing because it is a bald-faced lie.  (Or ...he's using an $8,000 dish with a variable transponder (radio) and is paying upwards of $2,000.00 monthly to his ISP ...such as what the Federal Government uses for systems built "on top" of DWay setups.

For the past two years I used a DW4000 (dual modem) system, and recently, 25OCT04 I dumped one grand into DirecWay's Top Notch Commercial System.  The fastest she'll run is 1.5Mbps down and 256Kbps up (as advertised).  Real life speeds are far different.  My Signal Strength knocks off a clean 97 with good skies, yet this morning mountain haze has me down to a 94-95 ..."real life" DirecWay Commerical Sat speeds average around 1.0Mbps 'down' and 100Kbps 'up' ...you might get better during times of lesser network congestion.  (My DW4000 averaged 700Kbps 'down' and 55 'up).

As an earlier post stated, speeds are getting slower because G4R and others have been Oversold, so now there's a new "bird" called Horizon 1 (meant for Westerly users and Alaska).  Give it a month and DirecWay will have oversold THAT one too.   I use G4R @ 1201MHz.

If you want to read the truth about DirecWay and how (and why) they treat their customers like they do, check out www.DirecWaysux.com ...there are over 380 "outraged" posts ...and climbing.  lol...

Cheers!

How does haze or clouds effect speed. Doesn't EMR  travel at the same speed through clouds as it does through clear sky's?  Could error correction possibly cause a slow down with clouds present?

Thanks,

John

heavy haze can disrupt the signal in occasions but just some haze can slow down the signal. Can't really explain it. Its common sence.
If you throw a rock in the air it will travel faster and longer. but if you throw it in water, its speed and trajectory will be deviated and slowed down horribly.

Greetings,  first post for a newby,  Noticed most have a good signal strength.  Best I can do is 67.  It took the installer 6 hours to get that. Smile Here's my morning test.

::::::::::.. Download Stats ..::::::::::
Connection is:: 1029 Kbps about 1 Mbps (tested with 579 KB)
Download Speed is:: 126 kB/s
Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/
Bottom Line:: 18 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 8.13 second(s)
Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=GRH5SMED6
This was at 66.
Average I think is around 760 or so.

This was at 66.

The only thing that really bugs me is the *lack* of ftp uploads.  I simply use a dial up account when I need to upload via ftp or ssh.

Will still try and get that 5mps download though.... Maybe I can put some aluminum foil on the dish and make it bigger huh? Smile

EMR traves at 186000 miles per second the same as light and reacts the same as light to clouds. The speed stays the same but the quanity that passes  through the clousd is lesss thus reducing singnal strength not speed. even if it did defiy physics and slow down, say by 50 percent it would take 1/4th second instead of 1/8th to reach the satellite. That couldn't possibly make much difference to upload speed.

You can think of EMR the same as electricity going through a resistor. The higher  the resistance is less current  gets through, but the speed remains  the same.

I'm thinking of going to a 10 foot dish to keep my singnal strength high during storms. Has anybody tried that yet. I never lest enugh signal on a 10 foot c band dish to significently reduce my signal during a storm.

I live in Oregon, and everyone knows about the rain in the pacific northwest.....I have had rain pouring down, and not had any signal problems.....but If there is a real heavy fog or mist like the kind you can cut with a knife......then my signal and speed get knocked down noticeably....go figure??
