A very strange thing happened to me one day (TRUTH)!

Several years ago I was using an old 166MHz computer and was on dialup downloading about 10MB from an FTP site ...and it was s l o w going. For some reason that I have yet to explain, the download suddenly came in SO fast that my Hard Drive sounded like a tiny machine gun, and I got that entire file in like 3 seconds. (Estimated time was closer to an hour)!
Now ...somebody kindly tell me what could have possibly happened to have made a 56k 'leap' to such (literally) impossible speed? It has never happened since ...but I still use the same modem as a backup.
Cheers,
The Reverend

ALl of a sudden in the middle of our chat my comp froze, and when it came back the file was done, completed at 47.(something) kB/s. O_o..

It wasn't an error. That file was perfect! I've been trying to duplicate the event using different FTP Servers (while on the phone to the man running them) ...but so far nothing has turned up. It boggles the mind to KNOW that a 56k can virtually handle 100 times it's stated input (d/l speed), let alone the HDD being able to take the punishment as well. If somebody could nail down what (precisely) caused this phenomenon, 'copper' would not be history in just a few more years. (Obviously, there's an undiscovered ability to transfer data at ultra high speeds on 'copper lines' that somehow occurred that one time). heheh...the only reason I've kept that modem (56k V90) is to "play with" in hopes of duplicating it again. There's an undiscovered element in it somewhere ...I lack the knowledge on that platform though. (But I'll keep trying until I cease breathing)!.
I am relieved to hear that at least one other has experienced the same ...so that 'fired me up' again ....here we gooooooooooo
Cheers!

Shutterfly, smile! Seriously, I want you to smile your lips out! I have Adelphia, and pay for the 4000/512 package, and I feel lucky if I get over 350 kB/sec. The only reason that I still pay for the package is because my upload never goes below 576 Kbps, which is about 71 kB/sec. I've done the whole bit to try and improve it. You know, tech support, calling people out, tweaking, etc. Feel lucky!

I've also had something similar happen...a file that I was downloading (msn 3.0) was going at about 3k and then my computer froze for about 10 seconds and it said it was downloading at 21k. I do know however copper lines have the potential to run at a high rate of speed (I think something like 20 Mbps mabey more I don't remember), remember DSL is transported over from the RT or CO (most of the time) but due to FCC regulations dialup is limited to 53.3k because according to the FCC above that limit your telephone wire acts like an transmitter and broadcast RF which can affect other devices within a certain range in your entire loop length. I have heard of people that modified their dialup to go much faster than rated however it was just between two computers in different homes and personally I never saw it happen so I don't know if it was true or not.

Same thing happened to me once also. Me and my friend used to download songs from eachother on Napster (yea, back then) and somehow, I would download a song from him and it would go 5-6Kbps. The upload of a 56k is like 3Kbps. So I would download another song, and it would also go 5-6. Then I took out like 10 songs from his liblary and they would all go at 3Kbps (yea it slowed down a bit). Then the next day at school, he confimed it was going that fast.
Ive had the same types of encounters with other people aswell (where they would download from me at 10Kbps, or i would download from them at 12 or something)
And the funny thing is that none of them had broadband, they were all using dialup.

I think compression is the answer. And no, not specifically compression sofrware, but on the mdem itself. That would give an effective speed above the cap of 56k.

I agree some anomaly happened to cause this, as we now know that C.O. lines are capable of much higher speeds than once thought. I once worked in a COM. Center in the Army and was told of Teletype speeds on C.O. lines that were very high for the time, although none of us knew how it worked or how the speeds were achieved.
