Hi, I am new to the forums. Just found them last night and was looking through some posts and found one that was interesting. One that said he went and bought a Surfboard Modem, model SB5120 and it increased his speed.

Well, curious, I went to Walmart today and picked up one of these for $59.99. Came home and went through the process with Mediacom to get it to work.

My scores last night were around 2.5Mbps down and 17Kb up.

The first thing I did when we got the modem working is come here to test the speeds and here are the results:

::::::::::.. Download Stats ..::::::::::
Connection is:: 4573 Kbps about 4.6 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB)
Download Speed is:: 558 kB/s
Tested From:: http://testmy.net  (server1)
Test Time:: 2006/03/08 - 3:08pm
Bottom Line:: 82X faster than 56K 1MB Download in 1.84 sec
Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 39.89 % faster than the average for host (mchsi.com)
Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/stats/id-X3OKF5AG8

I must have tested 50 times last night, always getting different results but they were always around 2-3 Mbits per second and always 17Kb per second for upload. Needless to say, with the change over on the cable modem I almost doubled my speed. I was using the Linksys before, cant remember the exact model number but it ended in a 10.

Unreal the difference a cable modem can make, I have been limiting my upload/download speeds ever since I got cable internet 5 years ago, all because of the modem.

I would suggest to anyone out there that has a linksys or other brand to upgrade to this Surfboard modem. If it doesnt work, you can always take it back to your local Walmart.

My upload test for 3MB just came back at 31Kbps, about 7KB over average.

Not sure what the difference is, but I love it.

Anyone know if Mediacom has it capped at 5Mbps? In alot of my download tests I am getting 5.6Mbps. Not that I mind.  Very Happy

Ive been using the MOT SB5100 since I first got cable a couple years ago
and have seen speeds on average around 4.6 ive seen 5.1 and 5.2 a few times while testing
Ive went over to DSLreports and tested there a couple times worthless to say the least claiming 3.5 or so but when ive tested other places and even overseas tests  i got 4.1 or 4.2

The Crappy Used stuff Mediacomm charges people to use is worthless
like a few of their employees

Mediacom's started running ad's for their 10/1 Max service round here which i find rather funny considering the trouble they have even keeping the 5/256 running. Anyway topics like this have been around forever and supprisingly enough it does work... of course the tech support people hate it when you ask them about it Razz
