I have had Cox out to my place a couple of times and they can't figure out why my computer is only getting about 1MB download when I am paying for the 5MB download. My upload is fine at 768KB. Is there any setting in the registry that can be changed to increase the transfer speed in downloads or increase the speed in the internet overall. I havent done any changes whatsoever to my computer. The setting are default of Windows XP Pro SP2.
My computer is
p4 3.0 With HT
1.5GB PC3200 RAM
160GB WD 8MB
FX5900 128MB
100 Base T

Cox has come out twice and they give me the same answer every time.. "The line is fine and they are no problems on their End."

One of my friends had the EXACT same problem just as you described with Cox, after about 2 months they FINALLY figured out his cap was set at the 1MB spot, so you may call them up and ask for them to check your cap. Good luck. Very Happy

 Sad evildevil,
It looks like your problem started about a month and one half ago, I looked at some of your other test scores and they were good, I guess a place to start is have you run anything to look for spy ware? also what O.S. do you have  and have you tried any kind of tweaks?....let us know and we will see if we can help....good luck  OBTW if the line is fine did the tech hook up his computer and get a better score?

I maintain my computer on a daily basis to make sure there is nothing out of the ordinary installed or running in the background.  I haven't tried any tweaks because I dont want to risk making it worse. I am running Win XP Pro SP2. My upload works great at 768KB. I took the advice and called Cox to check my CAP and they said it was at 5MB download. I need help!!

Smile OK but what have you run specifically to look for spy ware? Like I run spywareBlaster, Ad-Aware, Spy Sweeper just to name a few and these are all free, I haven't found anyone product whether you buy it or its free that will get every thing........so most of us use at least 2 or 3 of these pgms to scan our computers so we can see whats hiding....I'm also assuming that you just have a minimal amount of things that run on startup? let us know and we will go to the next step Smile and did you trouble start b4 or after SP2, I ask because it has caused many problems for people and it is possible to turn it off temporarily and test but , lets wait and see OK? when is the last time you ran a defrag?

try another LAN cable from your modem, sometimes damaged cables can slow down alot. Also reboot your modem shut off power for 30 seconds then plug it in again.

good luck

also, if you're stumped, have a buddy with a laptop jack in. if he's good, then you know it's your machine. have him bring his own patch to the modem too, in case you do have a bad cable.

 Smile evildevil,
Cool that you stayed with the problem to get it fixed.......I think I would ask for a month or two of free service for the hassle when its resolved, it doesn't hurt to ask....... anyway let us know and show us your improved score when it happens....at least they did admit it is their problem and didn't just fix it and act like nothing was wrong.  Smile

Smile Glad to hear that. I believe that Cox (at least in Tucson) takes problems seriously and tries to fix them. I never worked for Cox but I did work for Qwest years ago and it had problems then and still do........anyway glad your almost back to "normal"  Smile
