Just wanted to post my speed test.It is pretty good for regular dial-up especially at 28600 ft from the Telco or CO I'm never sure which is the most correct term.A tech at SBC told me the best I could expect was 50.6 because that is where there system limit is.He said I might be able to got the 53.3 limit with special filters.thi test is about the top for my system but I am gettint this speed more conisisently.Cholla Laughing cool

Smile Yep it is a very good score for dial^ up, the question of how fast can ya get a dial modem to go has been around for as long as the modem has. My idea is that the pay off for the work isn't that much, and of course there is a law setting the upper limit of the device..... But if I was using dial^ up I would be very happy with that  score...... good luck and keep visiting testmy.net........ we're always home ...LOL

You are right about the time to tweak the system to get this speed & I do test lower a some of the time but that is constanyly improving. One thing that helped is I installed all new phone cables in my home to the NID box. They are 24 gauge C3.If you are on dial-up and can do this it can help.Of course if you already have good wire it won't.I had the SBC tech do a POTS data line quality test.Good Luck if you try to get a data tech like this I spent a lot of time & several calls to SBC before I did.The usual response is WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT ?Inever heard of that test or a sudden transfer to SBC DSL in INDIA.The test can be accessed in hyper terminal the phone # is 1-866-293-6556 This is the number that works for me.It might be different for other areas. You do need to know how to use the HYPERTERMINAL & IT CAN ACT UNPREDICTABLE you may need to restart it a couple of times before it works. It showed 3 load coils on my line(you need to know how to read the graph to show this.Load coils are there to improve voice quality at a distance but are data KILLERS.I haven't done this but you can get a data line without the load coils as a second line if you are willing to pay for it.Cholla cool Smile

Sad Its really a shame when ppl get these kinds of responses from techs.....POTS testing has been around a long time, one of  the problems that I have seen forever is, techs have many tools, and testing facility's at their disposal but are not able to use or understand the data or in some cases know how to use the equiptment correctly. I worked in that industry for many years and saw it all to often........... When I worked foe U.S. West one time a tester argued with me about a test I asked him to do and his response was he worked there for 3 years and there was no such test. He eventually go his boss and he advised how to run the test. In fairness there are lots of good techs ya just gotta find em.......nice you put the effort into making you connection the best it can be, and you are correct about the importance of cable and other issues on site, any of these problems cause resistance which lowers speed.  Smile

I am putting a copy of two tests here that was done from HYPERTERMINAL on my computer I have deleted the computer trash you will get with the test so if you do the test expect to see a lot of it.If you are tech enough to read it & know what it means you probably don't need to.The graphs didn't paste just right but basically each drop after the long flat line of asterisks is a load coil on the line.If after this you see a U or V shaped pattern between drops the line has a problem most likely a bad load coil. This test also gives SNR( signal to noise ratio) which should be 25 or above.I hope there are others on dial-up at testmy.net & some of this info helps .It might give DSL users a little useful info too.Cholla Smile cool

Glad someone gets what a 56k modem is intended to do.

On another note the Verizon tech guy also told me when I get up to 28.8k thats really good for way out here, I am going through www.highstream.net and I really have no idea if going through a company like Verizon would make a difference or not, currently paying $8.95 a month, Verizon would be $22.95 a month.

Hi WMMC: My ISP is nts-online.net .I know this one is a branch of the larger nts but it seems to be ran like a franchise where the local owner controls it.I tried a couple of others when I first went online .Some had good reveiws but not such good service. So far I am satisfied with this one.It is only about 125 miles from me. If you have a good local ISP like this one thats what I would get .They are $9.99 a month but if you are located far from them You might not get the same results. cool
