;) Nah we dont laugh at people for not knowing something about a computer ......RAM(Random Access Memory) comes in blocks of 256, or 512 and so on......so 256,plus 256 plus 256plus 256 equals 1024  and Ram is a good thing to help your computer to process data more efficiently, I would suggest that you buy another 512 assuming that you have your 512 in one slot, the price of RAM is pretty cheap these days and a good investment 4 your computer.
Capacity
Measured in megabytes (MB), your RAM's capacity is its real value. More megabytes means more speed for all of your applications and the ability to run more applications at once. Keep in mind that computers have a limited number of slots available for units of RAM and a maximum number of megabytes that it can support. Make sure what you purchase is actually supported by your computer. Then if you add 512 you will have whats called 1gig of mem...........which is a good thing Smile I hope this helps you any other questions ask an I will try and answer or someone will be happy to help you.

i guess you are looking for what type of ram you have. well, my divining skills are off today, so we have to do it the hard way. is your comp from one of the big vendors? dell, gateway etc? if so, post the model here, and i can take a look at their site to see what it says, or you can try and take a look at your bios, some list at least the type, if not the organization, meaning number of slots used, etc.

what would help most is the exact model, if you have, since most of the big companies give all that info online.

bigw, go to this site http://www.everest.com and download the program called "everest home edition". After downloading, look to the menu links on the left of the screen. Click on +computer and expand the selections, then click on "overclock". After the overclock screen appears, arror down to SPD memory modules to see the who, what, how, and whys of your current memory in your OS. Also, as you'll see once you get into the site, there is absolutely nothing that you can't find out about your system.

Then, when you get ready to order new upgrade to your ram, go to either http://www.crucial.com or http://www.4allmemory.com,and scan your system with either or both. Both will tell you exactly what and everything you need to know about upgrading memory.

bigw, the idea was to get your computer scanned to see what you need to look for, not to necessarily buy from those sites. Did you use the "4allmemory" site for a scan? If necessary, go to one of the price comparison sites to get the best prices and service. Be sure and read the feedback from customers at each site you consider. One site that comes to mind to help you find the best price is at http://www.nextag.com

I use www.pricewatch.com  it's  a great computer centric site  once you know what you want.  You can even put and a specific PN and it will tell you who is selling it and prices.

Ok well first of all what if your system was custum built witch mine was since I am know how to build thne it is easy but anyway I build mine for 510 dollars is all and if I would have bought it built it would have been about cheapest 2,000 or so!!! Back then now you can get a good one like mine for cheaper!!!! But anyway I went to the site that you go to to buy the ram and I scanned my system and before I did it ask me what my system was like dell etc I just looked for custum and it wasn't there so I just left it blank then it told me what my system was like the ram 256 and 512 and P4 2.8GHz well anyway it did not tell me my ram name but I really don't need to know anyway!!!!!!!!! I bought a my own motherboard and it came with a book that tells me what is compadiple or not!!!! And I also know what kind I have one is generic and one is MS whatever that is the guy at the store said he thought it was MSI don't know!!!! But anyway if you want tofind out what kind of ram you have inless you have generic you can open up your system and look at the sticker on it and it should also have a sticker saysing like 3200 or something thanks I hope it helps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

nuff said.

if you want memory, go to www.newegg.com / www.zipzoomfly.com
They have the BEST prices on memory.  To start off, if you don't overclock, grab the 512mb corsair valu-select.  I have two in my comp and it works flawlessly.  Hell, for $67 bux each, you'd be happy too.  If you want more power, go corsair, kingston, crucial, or possibly geil (not too sure about them).  Another good site is www.pricegrabber.com to find the cheapest price anywhere, as well as the best stores to shop at.
