 This is how my Windows 98 SE is tweaked.You need to determine what RWIN ,MTU,&MSS your OS needs to use .Then you can add them to your registry .If you don't know how to get these values you should probably leave your registry alone until you do. Idea First backup your system before tweaking so you can restore it if the tweaks do not work for you.
I take no responsibility for your system if it crashes.These tweaks will allow you to make some
adjustments to your system if you want to do it yourself.There are programs that will do this for
you.If you use one of these this will allow you to see if the program made these adjustments to
your registry.If you don't like the adjustment a program made you can change it.The program may
back if you don't make adjustments to the program you are using to automatically make the adjustments
for you.Some allow ajustments some do not.Since I can't know what you have installed you will have to
decide what it will take for your OS to keep the settings you want.
  These tweaks are for setting your RWIN(DefaultRcvWindow),MTU&MSS.You need to determine yourself what
settings your OS needs.you need to install this patch http://dslnuts.com/patch/236926usa8.exe It might already be installed or you might be able to get it from MS .This is the MS link  http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;236926
  You need to have window scaling turned on if you want a larger RWIN than 65535 windows 98se will
automatically limit the maximum to this with window scaling off even if you set it larger.To determine this
you need to go here in your registry.HKLM/system/currentcontrolset/services/VxD/MSTCP there should be a string value
here "Tcp1323Opts" Exactly like this without the quotes.The O is the letter not a zero. Capital letters shoul be
as they are here& small letters as they are.This is important when tweaking the registry with any tweaks you might
add.If this setting is not here you need to add it as a new string value.The values are 0(zero) for Window scaling off,
1 for window scaling only on,2 for time stamping only on,3 for both on.My OS is set at 1.
 HKML/system/currentcontrolset/services/MSTCP
"DefaultRcvWindow" without quotes a string value this should already be in the right pane put in the rwin value you want.
HKML/system/currentcontrolset/services/MSTCP/parameters
"GlobalMaxTCPWindoSize" without quotes add as Dword value in right pane it probably won't already be there.The Windo part of this tweak is correct there is not a w at the end of window.
set the value the same as the rwin in DefaultRcvWindow.Select Decimal & put in RWIN.
 HKML/system/currentcontrolset/services/MSTCP/Ndi/params
string value "(Default)"without quotes set at your MTU value
string value named "@" without quotes set at your MTU value
 HKML/system/currentcontrolset/services/class/net/000
"IPMTU" without quotes string value in right pane set at your MTU value
 HKML/system/currentcontrolset/services/class/net/000/Ndi/params/IPMTU
string value "(Default)"without quotes set at your MTU value
string value named "@" without quotes set at your MTU value
add values to right pane
 HKML/system/currentcontrolset/services/class/net/000/Ndi/params/IPMTU/enum
delete the values for "Large" "medium" & "small" without quotes
Leave tht values for "Automatic" &(default) rename "automatic" your MTU value like "1500" for example
the put in "Automatic" without quotes as the value of the string value
it should look something like this example I could not copy the string value symbol so where I type string value is where the symbol would be
string value 1500       "Automatic".If you make this last tweak you need to make these setting to network in the control panel.Select your internet connection( such as Dial-up adapter this is what my OS uses)
then select properties then advanced highlight IP Packet size& select automatic.Then OK&OK again.you need to do this for each type of connection you have.
 HKML/system/currentcontrolset/services/class/net/000/Ndi/params/IPMTU/002
 string value "IPMTU" without quotes set at your MTU value
There may be other values here like 003,004,005 depending on your system network put in like the 002 value
 HKML/system/currentcontrolset/services/class/net trans/000
string value "MaxMSS" without quotes set at your MTU value
string value "MaxMTU"without quotes set at your MTU value
There may be other values here like 002,003,004,005 depending on your system network put in like the 000 value
 You can check the values your system has at ths site http://www.speedguide.net/index.php select the TCP/IP Analyzer :cool:Cholla

hey cholla Smile

I see you like it the old-fashioned  way to tweak  ;)

nothing wrong with that, but,  so much easyer to make these changes in cablenut and not in registry

all these settings is also avalible in cablenut, but MTU.....

Path MTU detection is enabled by default so you wont need to change it, unless you get a MTU of 576 with dial-up

and here is the definitions for each setting

http://www.dslnuts.com/9xme.shtml

hi VanBuran: I like both ways I tried cablenut I didn't like the way it worked in my system so I uninstalled it.It might work great on dsl or cable.Probably why the site is now called dslnuts  http://www.dslnuts.com/9xme.shtml [www.dslnuts.com] .For my dial-up this worked better & the registry settings in the tweaks can still be used to verify that a program like cablenut actually made the settings to the os.Some tests like tap/ip analyzer & broadbands tweak 2 tester can help you see what your settings are. Even if you have to trick it to get it to finish  if you have dial-up.Tweak tester 2 will finish with isdn& 128 set as the speed for any dial-up users.this probably makes their suggestions at the bottom of the test useless but the results should be accurate.I e-mailed them about adding a dial-up setting but never received an awnser.so everone do what works best for you thats what computing is all about. cool Cholla

Then you used it wrong, Cablenut is not made for a specific connection type, the program just make a GUI of your registrykeys that handle TCP.

The name of the site has nothing to do with the program

I guarantee that all settings you add in cablenut adjuster will also edit your registry, but if you like to varify it, just make a change in cablenut and then do a search in registry for eg "GlobalMaxTCPWindoSize" and you will see what i mean...

hi VanBuran: maybe I had too old of a version or the one I downloaded was defective.
I know it did not add the "GlobalMaxTCPWindoSize" setting to my registry.This was not even in the registry until I added it.After I found this tweak on the web & tried it.I do not use every tweak I find & would give others the same advice .doing that can crash your system I found this out the hard way.Since my system is working well I probably won't use cablenut but to those who want to use it go for it I admit the problem could have been me.

hi VanBuran: Cablenut put some of its settings in the registry that were not there like BSDUrgent that wasn't there before so I must have saved it to the registry.It has been long enough that I can't say for sure.Since I no longer have the setup.exe for cablenut in my system I can't check this out but I remember there was something in the read me text or help about limited testing on dial-up with windows 98.This could have changed with a more current version of cablenut.

Hi VanBuran: I downloaded the cablenut & installed it as far as its .setup.exe so I could look at the read me ;then I checked the manual settings but did not save it .Then I checked out my registry .Just installing cablenut wiped out all the tweaks I had in the MSTCP & put what it wanted there.It might have put settings like Tcp1323Opts back in if I had given it the chance I decided not to.I didn't like the fact that it made changes to my registry before I could look at its manual settings & set what I wanted it to change.Uninstalling it even before going any farther it did not return the registry to its previous settings.This was caused only by the setup.exe .Thankfully I had my registry backed up & scanreg restore saved me. So cablenut is not for me.

did you see any settings in cablenut adjuster?

if so, what settings did you see?

I cant remember, but you might need to reboot with 98 to see the settings you have

Hi VanBuran: there are very few settings that are already in the manual settings.About 6  I did not write them down  so I can't give them to you when I saw how much cablenut had already changed the HKLM/system/current control set/services/VxD/MSTCP settings even before a reboot.I uninstalled it went to dos & scanreg restored my registry. My computer is  back to normal now as far as I know.I just went & took this download test.
::::::::::.. Download Stats ..::::::::::
Connection is:: 52 Kbps about 0.1 Mbps (tested with 386 KB)
Download Speed is:: 6 kB/s
Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/
Bottom Line:: 1 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 170.67 second(s)
Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=ZV3MQ6XTB
p.s.
Just in case this test looks a little slow to someone  I am on regular dial-up.Other than Van he already knows this some of the other regulars do to.This is for those that don't saying to themselves what is a guy with a test this slow doing writing tweaks.
