Starband is having all kinds of trouble right now, and I'm wondering if the grass is greener on the other side.

i had, still have starband service. had probs with hardware and their customer no-service department pretty much told me to pound sand  evil3 . i am now on Cox.net and am getting awsome speeds (4948 down has been my personal record). usually i don't slam companies, but when they had no intention of helping me with lightning damaged equipment, i told them i will gladly give them their 500.00 worth of free advertising, and this is just some of it... if you have access to Cox... this seems to rock for me!!!

again, i in no way endorse or recomend starband as a provider... but also, i have some slightly damaged equipment for sale, or i might just run over it with the tractor???

thinking the tractor this will make me feel better!!!

Starband is having all kinds of trouble right now, and I'm wondering if the grass is greener on the other side.

Mr Ranger

This a email i got from Starband. You should of got one to.

Our engineers are currently conducting network maintenance and load-balancing activities to ensure proper operation of the network. Due to the nature of the maintenance, it will be performed at various times throughout the day over the next few weeks. During this period you may experience speeds resembling those usually only experienced during peak usage hours. Please do not worry, as it is a function of the network maintenance. Rest assured, our engineers are monitoring network performance very closely and will try to minimize the impact on your service. Thank you for your patience as we make the StarBand network work better for you.

Also *band will have a new satellite this spring.
I have both DW for about 2 years now and *band only for about month but i have not had any problems with speed or anything and i have no problem with my DW.

Why in the world would you be thinking about DW for.

Lance, Howdy neighbor!  Obviously Starband has you on the IA7 satellite.   On the GE4 bird they have lost lease on majority of their transponders and have overloaded the remaining ones.  Therefore they have throttled port 119 making the news server useless.   speed there is less than half of dial up.  The Web speed is intermittent ranging from:

::::::::::.. Download Stats ..::::::::::
Connection is:: 331 Kbps about 0.3 Mbps (tested with 1013 KB)
Download Speed is:: 40 kB/s
Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/
Bottom Line:: 6 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 25.6 second

::::::::::.. Download Stats ..::::::::::
Connection is:: 29 Kbps about 0 Mbps (tested with 579 KB)
Download Speed is:: 3 kB/s
Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/
Bottom Line:: 1 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 341.33 second
(s)

If you haven't checked into the starband.general news group you should.  The problems are well documented there.  As far as I know the group is only available on their server.

No i'am on GE4 cluster 4 subcluster 74  i have had only had 1 day where my speed was down to 500Kbps and that was  during this.

" I just got off the phone with StarBand. They are very
aware of the situation with the newsgroups. As you know the movement from
cluster 5 to cluster 4 has caused an imbalance in the system and things will
hopefully level off once everyone is moved by Dec 31.
They were throttling the newsgroups to give more bandwidth to http, ftp &
email during this migration and this afternoon tried to give some back to
the newsgroups (you might have seen it get better after 12noon EST) and
wound
up slowing down http downloads. They are trying to figure out how to give
some back to newsgroups without slowing something else down, so as you see
they are aware of the situation and working on it."

Otherwise i run pretty much like this.

::::::::::.. Download Stats ..::::::::::
Connection is:: 1002 Kbps about 1 Mbps (tested with 2992 KB)
Download Speed is:: 122 kB/s
Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/
Bottom Line:: 18 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 8.39 second(s)
Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=GNBDI0JPA

::::::::::.. Upload Stats ..::::::::::
Connection is:: 200 Kbps about 0.2 Mbps (tested with 2992 KB)
Upload Speed is:: 24 kB/s
Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/
Bottom Line:: 4 times faster than 56K you can upload 1MB in 42.67 second(s)
Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=IMUXGN20E

Also they have been doing some maintenance and load-balancing.

I have 484 pro small office plan so it may be not be affecting me as much, but i have not seen alot of complaints at starbandusers, and there is quite a few dealers/installers their.

And it's -20° here now. I bet rev would love to be here now. Razz

I am using a 360 modem and I'm sure they are giving the 480's priority.  I am well aware of the items you quoted above.  Check out starband.general and you will see the full extent of the issue.  This has been going on for just shy of two months.  Any "load balancing", "migration" and "stabilizing" should not take months.  I am aware of the delayed launch of IA8 satellite and hope that will take care of the problem.  As of now though it is a mystery as to when that bird will launch.  I have not been able to find any info as to a rescheduled date.

Mr Ranger
Lance, Low here last night was -7.  It's funny how much of a difference in temp when I can practically see your house from mine.  That's the Straits area for you though.
