When I do a tracert using windows cmd in run to www. testmy.net or www.google .com with my router hookup on the second hop I get [request timed out]. When I remove the router and connect directly to the modem I get [request timed out] on the first hop. Any ideals why it is doing this. Don't know if this make a different or not ,But I am running a Linksys router[WRT54G] with dd-wrt software install on it.The modem is a Motorola Surfboard SB5100 that is at least 2 years old.

your ISP blocks that ping to their router

If this is right, why would Comcast block it?

The second time I tracert in cmd I disconnected my router and hook right up to the modem and I got [request timed out] on the first hop instead of the second hop. Is the first hop from the computer to the modem? Could my modem be going bad?

If you are using a router it will be your first hop and the second will be the modem or ISP. Tim and Me had the same problem with Insight for a while. The ISP is putting a ping block up. No your modem is not going bad. I learned that the hard way. I went to Insight with my modem and exchanged it for a new one and it did the same thing, timed out on the first hop. Who knows why those Idiots do what they do!
