F1 is going into the realm of hybrid vehicles

As of the 2009 season the rules for Formula 1 racing will contain the storage and release of kinetic energy in the cars. This means that the cars will effectively become hybrid vehicles, storing energy as they enter a corner under braking and then releasing it to help accelerate out of it.

I encourage the idea but... why would they do that for? why do they need the energy, especially at the expense of extra weight?

well, dog, it's not a question of being smart, it's a question of being allowed or not.
and as to why they would need the energy: the engines put out around 900 bhp. if you can boost that to 1500 for accelaration out of corners by storing energy under braking....

Byut like Le_Murphant said at the cost of extra power robbing pounds also. Guess in their formulas it adds up.
