Whenever I run 2 miles or more, I tend to get the taste of blood in my throat. I asked a friend of mine and she said she got the same, and we both agreed it was only when it was cold out.

Anyone have an idea why this happens?

the mucus membranes in ur nose and throat probably get dry as ur running and breathing in thru ur mouth, making it crack and bleed...try using saline nasal spray...or a little vaseline or bag balm just inside ur nose...but for ur throat water is probably all u can do...i used to get that when i'd hike with my daughter...never though much about it...
i live in arizona so with the dry air, saline nasal spray is a way of life for me and to combat the allergies i use alot of it hahaha...shoulda took it up the mountain with me...never even thought of it...but it should help...if not u definitely should ask ur doctor about it...don't mess around guessing about it for too long.

Yeah don't hesitate. Because when I was younger in highschool coach made us run 2 miles every morning, cold or hot. Before we could start on the weight benches. Then 2 times up and down th ropes. Then we got to play on the benches.  Very Happy

And that never happened to anyone I know of.  Neutral

It's probaly not blood you are tasting but an increase in the salinity level of your saliva & mucus.Spit on something white when your experience this & see if there is any blood. If there is it might be time for a doctor visit to determine the cause.
The solution is probably to just hydrate better before the run.
The cold changes the viscosity of the mucus & sometimes increases the quantity as well. This makes you more aware of its taste
Now for the running. It is a high impact form of exercise.Hard on knee & hip joints. You may pay the hard way for it when you get older with hip or knee replacement. So slow it down to a brisk walk.Or swim if you have access to a pool .Much better IMO & some others opinions as well.

blood can be there even if u don't see it...it's called occult blood...and can be in any body fluids...at a physical if they do a rectal exam they will test for occult blood.

so if more hydration does not help immediately please see ur doctor immediately...blood does not taste like salt...or saline...ur should not taste blood in ur saliva...there is nothing else in the world that tastes like blood...and it's not salty...

i urge u to speak to ur doctor...just a phone call even...

and there is nothing wrong with running as long as u do it on proper surfaces...dirt or pavement...not cement...and with proper shoes...don't skimp on ur shoes...

I guess if the quantity of blood was small enough an occult test could be done on the saliva.
For the blood tasting  salty mine does if I lick a bleeding wound but I guess that could be sweat I'm tasting.I've never tasted blood that was drawn so it wouldn't have skin sweat contamination so I can't say if it would taste salty. The same would be true for saliva or mucus contamination.
btw I'm not curiuos enough to taste drawn blood.
I disagree on the running being safe .Regardless of the shoes or surface it is still a high joint impact form of exercise.& this produces wear in the joints. It is just less impact on softer surfaces & with correct shoes.
So only run when in danger like if a bear is chasing you & then only faster than the slowest person with you.If alone play dead for a bear anyway.

As a kid with a young body that replenished itself, it is not a bad thing. I believe they are targeting older individuals on the running being hard on you. I know I feel it now on the treadmill. And by the way, being I treadmill daily twice a day, I believe it will be me passing you in the case with the bear.  :haha:

You might be in front I haven't ran for a long time.I was pretty fast at one time when a lot younger & didn't consider running a bad exercise.I think I could still call on the old technic if the adrenaline was flowing.
The damage is still being done to the younger runner it just doesn't show up until older.Although not necessarily a runner but it was probably part of her exercise regimine Mary Lou Retin is now making knee replacement commercials.
Seeing a doctor might give you some peace of mind.Surely an occult blood test of the saliva & mucus wouldn't be too expensive.I guess the best time would be right after you ran in the cold. You could make an appointment so they could take the test right after you ran in the cold. That shouldn't be a problerm as doctors always get you in right at the appointment time.

they'll know by your symptoms what tests, if any, to do...never heard of an occult blood being done on saliva (stool and urine is about it...except for micro exam on other fluids) but i suppose it could be done...but even if there is such a thing they aren't gonna do it just because you say...they are going to examine you and go from there.
just make the appt...doesn't matter what time of day...if there is a problem, where ever they'll know how to find it and what tests to do.

the last sentence of sequoia's statement should tell u that he's just joking...
which he shouldn't be on this...this could be something or it could be nothing...

but other than to trying to better hydrate your mouth and sinuses...tmn can't really advise you on this other than to say...please make an appt to see your doctor...and take his advice...

on matters of your health, take the advice of your health practitioner...not strangers you've never met

One other tid bit I learned today for treadmillers today at the VA hospital is when purchasing shoes for this excersize buy running shoes. I know I thought it was more like walking also, but it is not. You need the extra support. And brand did not seem to matter. So Wally World here I come.  2funny

I was making a joke about the way doctors make you wait for an appointment.Always about an hour late by the time you see one.I bet the doctor wouldn't like it if I showed up an hour late for an appointment & wanted to see him right away.Kind of one sided.
I don't know what occult blood test they could perform I assume anywhere they are looking for otherwise undetectable blood.

tommie gorman  they seem to have specialty shoes for almost every sport these days.A long way from the old flat bottomed canvas "track shoes" with the three or four side stripes depending on brand.I bet you remember those.

Yep. light, cool, and fast. But not a damn bit of support in them. You were actually better off with a pair of converse all stars. At least they have a steel strip in them.
