i'm glad you like it. the photo was blurred too, and i don't wear a beret yet so i'm not qualified to find those hard edges without a reference
dagger- the selection tool is a pain in the ass, i just filtered it with 'daubed' brush strokes and smudged it around

First thing, good try bro. Now, as far as the lasso tool is concerned. Everyone wants to be a PhotoShop expert and they dont have any idea what they are trying to say. ;) You want to set the feather on the lasso to 5 pixals. Cut out your render(the pic of you and your son) then drag over to the background. At this point you are going to want to take your art history brush and set it to around 40%. Use a light brush(not a heavy one). Go around the edges of the render to blend in into the background. Also turn down the opacity on the render so that the BG blends right into the render. Take a look at my sigs and check out my sight. Look at the sigs/banners/wallpapers on there and look close at the renders and how they are all "part" of the BG. I hope this helps a little. (just FYI....the renders in the sigs below were once 1024x768 wallpapers. I cut them out using the steps I have listed above for you. As you can see they are not blurry and look as if they "belong" in the backgrounds I have made. One last thing, dont be afraid to make numerous layers for the backgrounds. I average around 40 layers for one background.

wow 40 layers is a lot!
actually i didn't use the selection tool at all, this was a digital painting just using the brush and smudge tool. the selection tool reply was a bad joke
thanks a lot for the tips though, man. appreciate it

This is a little late.... but I don't know if some people realize that TheArtworkGuy isn't just taking pictures and editing them.... he takes the picture and draws it with his hands, he has a digital pen that he uses, this isn't just photoshop he's doing here guys
I remember back when we were kids and he used to draw comic book characters, some of his drawings were better than the comics his used as a reference point
True artist since he was born
~ and he has just started portraits in the past 2 months or so....
