call Cox, your problems have nothing to do with tweaking.

I did call Cox and they replaced my modem and did some line tests that were OK and they also did some speed tests to their local server which turned out to be 3.96 meg down and 247 up  (test.lvcm.com)

They said everything was good and that I may be experiencing problems due to network traffic and the distance to testmy.net server.

That's why I came to  you guys....the experts

Well you left that part out conveniently..

always test your speeds to different places..

one slow site does not a bad connect make..

try dslreports tests..

also I use toast.net..

If they are all slow its you ..

if some are slow its THEM

sorry for the brevity.

Cox is fast...just like they advertise (but the distance is short)

DSLReports is slow, Testnet is slow and another one I forgot is slow.

I'm lost and Cox is saying it's not their problem or mine -- which confuses the hell out of me

Could it be a virus or spyware? I recomend startup inspector. Run it hit consult and see what happens. Google starup inspector. Its free. Check for virus as well. Maybey an online test. http://housecall.trendmicro.com/. Hope that helps. Sounds to me like spyware problems.

Cablenut Tweaker

......I did.  not looking so hot.

1. What OS are you running, ex win 98, win xp, if you have XP make sure you have SP2 installed! Also download the p2p fix for SP2 here http://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=1497
2. What service do you have, what is the advertised speed for download/upload.
3. What tweakprograms you already got installed, and run this test http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks  copy and paste result URL  adress in your post!
4. What speed do you have against www.testmy.net and http://nitro.ucsc.edu/  also make a tracert, go to start-run type command and hit enter, type tracert testmy.net and hit enter, right click copy all and paste it in your post.
5. Under your LAN connection - properties - general tab, uninstall all the protocols there that you do not need.
6. Open Internet Explorer and select tools - internet options - connections -
LAN settings, make sure nothing there is checked.
7. Connect your modem via ethernet (NIC) and make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC. Set your NIC duplex mode to 10mb half duplex for Cable, for DSL it depend on the ISP service unless you are using a router, if so then set it to 100mb full duplex for both Cable & DSL. If you are using a router make sure you have the latest firmware.
8. Power cycle your modem, unplug it for atleast 30 seconds.
9. Download and update then do a scan with SpyBot http://beam.to/spybotsd and Ad Aware http://www.lavasoft.com/support/download to remove any spyware
10. ZoneAlarm firewall has known problems with dropping speed, i suggest to uninstall it and compare speed
11. Install Outpost Firewall http://www.agnitum.com\ or Sygate Firewall http://www.sygate.com/
12. Scan for viruses with your antivirus app, if you do not have one get one, AVG is great http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php
13. Make sure you have ALL of the latest Windows Updates
14. Download and run CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/

Hi Spooner:Before you just accept what the Cox speed test LasVegas says.This is my speed on that test with a 56K dial-up modem.
   MySpeed Results
Download 122,384 bps
Upload 12,272 bps
Thats all I could copy & paste from the Cox site .That would be 122Kbps download
I haven't tested testmy today but it will be slower than that.The point is the Cox test is not accurate it is a make you feel like you are faster test. Cholla
This is my test at testmy.net today:
 ::::::::::.. Download Stats ..::::::::::
Connection is:: 45 Kbps about 0 Mbps (tested with 97 KB)
Download Speed is:: 5 kB/s
Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/
Test Time:: Mon Feb 21 15:27:01 CST 2005
Bottom Line:: 1X faster than 56K 1MB download in 204.8 sec
Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 59.21 % of your hosts average (nts-online.net)
Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/id-6JDIAH92W
I had much better speed for a while I suspect my ISP did something to slow me down to a normal speed for 56K.But the Cox test taken a few minutes before shows about 2& a half times testmy.net speed.

Yea...my Cox.net test (test.lvcm.com) always shows 2+ times faster than anything I ever get at testmy.net or DSLreports

...anyone have any thoughts.  I did everything Van-B said......Nothing has improved consistently.  My max at testmy.net has been around 2meg download.  I should be getting 4 at peaks
