cell phone connection

I have two methods of connecting to the Internet, at home I have cable, on the road and in my camper I use my cell phone through Verizon wireless. I have been wondering is there a way to tweak my laptop for both with out going through a lot of trouble. Is there a happy medium or should I just leave it alone. Oh, guess I should mention my speeds with the cell phone, which usually are between 100kb and 130kb, is this normal? Reason I ask is because I have only been using the cell phone for about 4 months or so.Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Yes.. this is fairly normal for the cell phone app... From what I have read on the net it seems that anything over 100kb is standard... If you are looking to make it go faster you might want to check out verizon's high speed wireless internet option... It requires the use of a special laptop card and you can get up to 2mbs download... However like all call phone and wireless stuff the current coverage area is only in D.C and San Diego... The Verizon site clearly states that for their "internet" 40-60kbs is standard with bursts up to 144kbs... It seems like you are on the upper end so i would be really happy!
As far as tweaking it... I dont think that you will see any difference what so ever... The service is just to slow and with a range from 40kbs to 140kbs it is hard to find one speed setting that would work for both of those speeds...
For the home you can speed that up pretty easily...

Check that link out for more info about tweaking the home connection... If you do tweak it you are going to need to change it back for when you are on the road... otherwise you connection will be slow... I think... You might be able to setup 2 users on windows xp and use one for home and the other for the road... I am almost positive that the registry entries would be different and allow you to do this...
Well I hope this helps some what.. and welcome to the forum!! I think you have one of the most interesting ways of connecting to the net... Through the cell!

Swimmer, thanks for the info. I think for now I will just leave well enough alone. You are probably right, I won't see much difference and if it is within the normal range for speed I can live with it. I keep reminding myself that I am on the Internet in the middle of know where, that and I can connect anywhere I have a cell signal. Thanks, yes it is a cool way to connect.
As far as home goes, I have my old desktop tweaked and it does okay, my cable company has dropped my speeds in the last year or so. I remember when I first started with them I would get in the 2 and 3 thousand range, now if I get 1000 I feel it is a good day. Most time I get about 700. That's in the Sat. range and I have asked them about this and they really don't offer an answer.
Anyway, I appreciate your time, info about the cell phone connection has been hard to find, I guess there are not a lot of folks using this kind of connection.

Hey for the home connection try using this program... It clears out all of the crap that IE and other people try and install on your computer, aka spyware... We had another person with the same type of problem..

Thanks again Swimmer, I do have Lavasoft on both of my machines and run it on a regular basis but, I will download this one and see what happens. Looks like I won't be home for at least another 6 days or so but, when I do get home I will see if it makes a difference on my desktop. Anyway, when I do get home I will be posting another question concerning my router and it leaving ports open, maybe someone can answer this one, seems the MFG claims they are closed and when I run port scans they come up open. I can't remember all of them right now and that is why I am going to wait. Again, thanks for your help.

Yeah,
I use three or four different ones to remove all the scum ware these idiots try to put on our machines,Spy Sweeper is one that I use,and I run often, also have a firewall and McAfee running all the time.....but I still got nuked around Christmas ....and I wasn't even looking at porn then.....lol....anyway its a lot easier to try and keep them out then get them out after the fact.....what pisses me off the most about these guys is it kills my speed....I might even ignore them if they wouldnt mess with the SPEED....that gets my attention.....lol

I would agree with what Microwave said... Around any big holiday the spy people decide to make sure you know to buy that extra little something that you dont want and have never heard of... I think that Spy sweeper is one of the best out there that I have ever used... It is really easy to nav and it removes just about everything that I have ever seen...
As far as some of the ports being open I think that if you have your router to open the ports when they are pinged then well it will be open when you run those tests... However there are ways to close those ports for ever or just when you are not using them..
