Broadband over the electric grid is HERE!!!!!  4Mips currently, with second generation equipment increasing it to 90Mips!  First generation is already in some markets; $25/mo was quoted in the article.  The main outfitter in the story is a company out of Texas and their fee is 25% of the revenues from the local power company.

Game soon to be over D-Way.  Bye, bye.

Technology
Utilities Looking to Fast New Broadband over Power Lines
by Wade Goodwyn

Morning Edition, August 16, 2005 · Utility companies are excited about the marketing opportunity for a new technology that allows high-speed Web access through existing electrical outlets. The Federal Communications Commission has given its approval.

Additional Info:

Their product is 20Mip, Homeplug or WiFi.  Since this technology has other BIG benefits to the power company, ie remote meter reading, instant feedback of downed lines and blown transformers, this looks to be the real deal.  Start calling your power company to let them know you are interested.
