Hello all, I've just registered now that I've got cable internet.  I'm slightly disappointed with my speeds.  My download test speeds vary from about 350-430, which is nice.  The only thing I am concerned, and frustrated about, is my upload speed.

It stays at a constant upload speed of 29 kB/sec.  Now, I am paying for 3Mbps cable internet, and the advertised upload connections are a little more that 360Kbps, and the tests are showing that I am getting an upload connection of 238Kbps.  (I've run the download and upload tests numerous times)  What can I do to increase these speeds?  If I call my cable company, can they fix this problem?

Here is some more information:

OS:  Windows XP Home Edition (SP1)

Also, I have run three spyware scanners (Adaware, Xoftspy, Spybot) and not one of them is detecting spyware, so I know it can't be that.

Help would be greatly appreciated  Smile

-Greg

EDIT:  Also, when I am downloading files off of download.com (because I know you can get your true speed from their servers) my download speed goes to about 250 kB/s after about a minute.

I used the non-advanced options.  It's 1:21 a.m. over here, and I was a bit too lazy to do the advanced steps, though I can handle them.

Tweaktester results:  http://ttester.broadbandreports.com/tweak/block:3eac241?service=cable&speed=3000&os=winXP&via=normal

I cant see anything wrong in your tweak test

Maby your routing is bad against testmy.net

Make a tracert

start-run type cmd and hit enter

type tracert testmy.net and hit enter

make a ss or copy and paste it here

you can also try other speedtest, close to where you live

http://www.dslreports.com/stest?more=1

i know many dosent have upload test but some has

good luck

When I performed the tracert, after the second hop, it started giving me "Request timed out."  Here are the results from the speedtest location nearest me.

EDIT:  2004-09-23 05:04:34 EST: 2943 / 172
Your download speed : 3014025 bps, or 2943 Kbps.
A 367.9 kB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 177053 bps, or 172 Kbps.

Try this

1. Under your LAN connection - properties - general tab, uninstall all the protocols there that you do not need.

2. Open IE and select tools - internet options - connections -
LAN settings, make sure NOTHING there is checked.

3. ALWAYS connect your modem via ethernet (NIC) and make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC from the manufacturer. Set your NIC duplex mode to 10mb half duplex for Cable, for DSL it is ISP dependent unless you are using a router, if so then set it to 100mb full duplex for both Cable & DSL (the instructions are in my Help & Tips link). If you are using a router make sure you have the latest firmware.

4. Power cycle your modem, unplug it for atleast 15 seconds.

5. Download and update then do a scan with SpyBot 1.2 http://beam.to/spybotsd & Ad Aware 6.0 http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download to remove any spyware then install and update SpywareBlaster to stay spyware FREE. YOU MUST USE BOTH AD AWARE & SPYBOT TO ENSURE YOU ARE SPYWARE FREE SINCE ONE FINDS WHAT THE OTHER MISSES.

6. If you have Zone Alarm as a firewall uninstall it then visit Zonelabs.com for further instructions on removing it's left over junk.

7. Install Outpost Firewall http://www.agnitum.com\ or Sygate Firewall http://www.sygate.com/ , both have FREE and Pro versions and are heads above ZA.

8. Scan for viruses with your antivirus app, if you do not have one get one IMMEDIATELY, AVG 6.0 http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php is an excellent FREE AV app.

9. Make sure you have ALL of the latest Windows Updates

Adelphia blocks ICMP packets, so you will not be able to run a tracert  from a command prompt, you can use www.pcpitstop.com and use there tracer tool.  As for your speeds, I don't know of any Adelphia packages that offer a 384 upload.  You say you get 3000 down, that package has a 256 upload.  There only other package is the premiere service, which offers 4000 down and 512 up.  From what i can see, you are prety much right at your cap figuring in overhead.
