Hey all:

1) What ping should I expect when pinging www.testmy.net  Mine sure seems slow with pings in the 130-160 range,  so what is normal?  What should I do if this is slow?

2) I have Cox 9/1 setup...   I almost NEVER get close to 9 whatever time day or night I try.  I've seen it,  but MOST tests are 3-5 range is all.   Why and what can I do about it?

Some background facts:

Sys is XP    *   Intel  P4 3.0c    *   Dlink202 modem   *   I've run tests with modem direct to sys and via my home network,  results are very close to each other.    *    I've tested MANY cablenut settings and nothing is having an effect on the consistency of tests so it's hard to know if the tweaks are doing anything.

Fire away guys  I'm all ears.

You are sure when u do the speed test you are the only one in the network using the bandwidth in your house?

your pings should really be under 100ms.

is that modem USB or Ethernet ?

Hey Just:

As I said,  I isolated the modem and tested that way as well,  still  high pings and unpredicatable results.  I understand the multi user deal.  Smile  We have 4 comps Xbox and VoiP,  so I know it's going to get worked,  that why I direct connected.

Re your second question.  Why would I pay for 9/1 service and try to use a USB modem....  LOL.  EXCEPT for the modem all Comps and routers are 10/100/1000  until you go to the wireless side.  There I'm running multichannel G so 108.

Before the upgrade to 9/1 things were very consistent during tests and pings in the 50-75 range if I remember right.

So what should I do about this??

Thanks

Shocked That look's like a Cox issue. Have you called them Question I also have Cox 9Mbps/1Mbps and I'm running through a router and have never gotten that high of a ping.

1   163 ms   102 ms   102 ms  192.168.0.1

connect direct to modem via  ethernet and make a new trace

Check all your cables to see if any are loose.

Isn't 192.168.0.1 A Linksys Router's IP Address?

Are you sure you are by-passing your router?

I think that's the IP address for most routers, not just linksys, I don't think you're bypassing your router.
