I was wondering which Antivirus software is better.  Currently im using Symantec Antivirus 9.0 (also says Symantec Client Security)

I was wondering if Norton Antivirus 2005 is better or worse or same

Anyone have any other suggestions on what is the best antivirus software(fewest bugs, errors, etc. and highest detection rate)

I have tried both Nortan and AVG... I like both of them... I have not tried the security client from Symantec.. my guess is that both that and nortan are basically the same thing.. just different intended uses.. Question

Norton sucks.  Get NOD32.

For the most part, I don't think one virus scanner is much better than the others considering they are pretty much all based off of signature detection.

I did read about one particular AV client that supposedly was able to detect virus-like activity without having new signatures loaded, this was Panda Antivirus.

I personally use Norton Corporate Edition.  The thing I like the most about it, if you are able to get your hands on a copy is #1-no license key and #2-no subscription fee.

I don't know how many times I've encountered stupid old computers that had Nortons or Mcaffee's version 1.0 loaded and the subscription expired back in 1997.  It's shameful charging money for virus protection like that...once you own a product, you shouldn't have to pay for updates (IMO).

I like norton internet security it is better than avg because I had avg and I had a virus and guess what avg didn't detect it and neither did macfee only norton. But I would get norton internet security it has norton antivirus and a firewall all in on package!!!

i used to use AVG Free Edition and i had problems trying to update it, so i was forced to switch to something else, which ended up being Symantec Antivirus 9.0 corporate client (got it for free from a friend Smile )

Im basically looking for something that doesnt take up much memory and tahts y i went with the corp edition cause it just sits there and detects viruses, no fancy schmancy interface and auto update and stuff taking up system resources)

but i have 1 more question
Corporate editions are usually gonna be better than the retail home versions right?

it all depends on what qualifies as "better" in your book.

I'd be willing to bet that the technology in Corporate Edition/Personal Edition/Internet Security are all the same.  The big advantage to CE (corporate edition) is:
-it supports "push out" installations.  You can sit at a single administrator console and roll it out to all of the clients on your network without having to visit each workstation.
-It has features which tie into Antivirus server...which is cool if you're running it.

The NAV server will go out and download the signature updates on a schedule and push them out to all of the clients, saving internet bandwidth. Smile  It also serves as a single point of reporting client status (infections/virus signature versions etc) and can send out alerts.  You can schedule full or partial system scans on the clients without their permission, just force a scan.  And rather than having quarantine on the clients, you can configure the server to work as a quarantine server also.

As mentioned before, the thing I like about it is not having to pay for the updates when the subscriptions expire.  I like how it's nice and basic and I've used it for probably close to 7 years now so I'm pretty attached to it.

Smile I have used many free anti virus pgms over the years, it seems that the free ones are just doing R&D because after a time they are no longer free.....(after they work out the bugs they then want to charge you) The last free one I used was C.A. (computer Assoc) they promised they would always honor the key code and give you updates forever(sure) after 2 years they starting selling their product and eventually stopped supporting the free version. I also had the same experience with several others, oh well I guess if its free for a while you shouldn't complain, but free users are their test rats and they don't show any loyalty after the party is over. The one thing that worries me about the free stuff is I think it can leave a system pretty vulnerable while the company learns how to make a good program that they can sell.......hmmmmmm there are no free rides in this world!! I now pay to use McAfee (their latest greatest) but I have used most of them.......I think I like McAfee because its complex and hands on tinkering, but its probably no better or no worse than the rest of them:)Smile
unstable I agree that the C E is the best but, the initial cost is really high....and usually paid for by a big company ,natuarly because its going to be used on many systems,

Here are a few indicators on how well most Antivirus Programs perform.
Test Results Download. The .xls file (Microsoft Excel Worksheet) shows the best results in order.

Here is another list that displays rankings.
Ranked Results

I'm currently using Kaspersky Personal Pro Version 4.5.0.97 along with Sygate Personal Firewall Pro 5.5 Build 2710. Both are light on the system and work great.

EDIT: I just upgraded to the new pro version 5.0.12 (10-19-04), and it's even better.

i think i will switch to kaspersky; symantec antivirus corp edition is being weird and it like just disappears before it finishes scanning C:...i tried uninstalling and then reinstalling, but didnt seem to work

Hopefully, Kaspersky is worth the switch
